Acoustic Cloaking
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction An acoustic cloak is a shell surrounding an object so that sound incident from any direction passes through and around the cloak, making the cloak and the object acoustically “invisible.” We do not experience acoustic cloaking because the materials required are exotic and, as far as we know, not found in nature. Yet there is no fundamental physical restriction on acoustic cloaking. Implementation is a matter of developing metamaterials with very unusual properties. Acoustic cloaking is in fact more likely to be achieved before its electromagnetic (EM) counterpart. he reason is that the cloaking material must have structure on sub-wavelength scales. Speciic examples will be explained below. Acoustic wavelengths are typically orders of magnitude larger than optical wavelengths, meters vs. microns, which makes the acoustic problem easier, in principle.

Acoustic and electromagnetic cloaking
In this talk, we shall present our recent progress on acoustic and electromagnetic cloaking of obstacles with transformation media. In wave scattering, an obstacle is an object that waves cannot penetrate inside. With artificially designed transformation media, we show that the obstacle can be virtually reshaped under acoustic or electromagnetic wave detection. These cloaking media are shown to...
متن کاملAcoustic cloaking transformations from attainable material properties
We propose a general methodology and a set of practical recipes for the construction of ultra-broadband acoustic cloaks—structures that can render themselves and a concealed object undetectable by means of acoustic scattering. The acoustic cloaks presented here are designed and function analogously to electromagnetic cloaks. However, acoustic cloaks in a fluid medium do not suffer the bandwidth...
متن کاملScattering theory derivation of a 3D acoustic cloaking shell.
Through acoustic scattering theory we derive the mass density and bulk modulus of a spherical shell that can eliminate scattering from an arbitrary object in the interior of the shell--in other words, a 3D acoustic cloaking shell. Calculations confirm that the pressure and velocity fields are smoothly bent and excluded from the central region as for previously reported electromagnetic cloaking ...
متن کاملAnalysis of an approximate cloaking for acoustic scattering problems in R3
In this paper, we consider the acoustic cloaking based on singular transformations and its approximation in the context of scattering problems in R. The cloaking based on singular transformations can not avoid a singularity of the resulting Laplace–Beltrami operator because singular transformations blow up one point to a sphere. In order to treat the singularity properly, we use the variational...
متن کاملAcoustic cloaking theory
An acoustic cloak is a compact region enclosing an object, such that sound incident from all directions passes through and around the cloak as though the object was not present. A theory of acoustic cloaking is developed using the transformation or change-of-variables method for mapping the cloaked region to a point with vanishing scattering strength. We show that the acoustical parameters in t...
